Digital Painting —
June 2022
In 2014, I started a digital painting/study
of an awesome photo of female barrel rider (see
that pic in the reference composite below).
— You'll also find two 'crops' from
today's painting below — which may make
it easier to view some details in it * —
After cats (BIG and small) —
horses
are my favorite animal — and so
I really enjoyed painting this one.
Though, as I worked — I began altering this and
that,
and expanding and expanding the scenet. Early on,
I had
most of the layout as you see
above — but used
photos as
'place-
holders' for some of the ideas
I had in mind for what was by then becoming
an ever-growing, 'epic' battle tableau. : )
As things sometimes go, I kinda burned out on
finishing this in 2014 — but did a little more work on it
sometime in 2018 — and though it still languished as an
unfinished painting — finishing it was always in the back of
my mind — but for various reasons never go to it..
After completing my last digital painting,
The Giant Hunters — Homecoming, which was
also a painting I started long ago — I finally decided
to see if I could polish this one off as well.
Along the way, I collected 100s of reference
images for it — but as you may note from this
composite of a few of them— I worked hard at not
just making photo-realisitc 'studies' of them.
If you are the photographer or copyright holder of any of
the references above — I'd be happy to add a credit and
link back to you — or delete your image if you'd prefer:
